GPT4 o1 Agrees Free Will Is An Illusion?

I’m a determinist, which means I believe free will is an illusion. I have Sam Harris and Dr. Robert Sapolsky to thank for turning me onto the idea.


I’ll spare you the 30 minutes of debating, but it returned these three arguments repeatedly:

1 – That humans can still somehow make decisions and take actions that violate causality.
2 – That the topic of determinism is debated among philosophers.
3 – “But compatibilism,” which is a friendly term for contradiction.

Finally, I got it to arrive at its conclusion only using logic:

  1. I currently cannot imagine a scenario in which I would/could be making a decision that previous events and circumstances have not led me to. Also, seeing the absolute disparities in individuals’ conclusions and actions when faced with the same sets of data in this world have been a pretty convincing factor in leading me to believe free will is not something we have in any way that we currently think it would be.
    I would love to be proven wrong or convinced I’m wrong on this, but so far nobody has made a compelling case.
